Why a business needs social media, and why it is not enough
“We have Instagram, we don’t need a website” is the most common sentence we hear. Then Instagram changes the algorithm, the profile drops, and the business discovers that 5,000 followers are not its own and that the client searching on Google cannot find it.

What social media does for an Albanian business
It makes it visible to people who were not looking for it: the local who sees the restaurant in a story, the tourist discovering the beach on TikTok, the diaspora seeing apartments on Facebook. It builds trust: faces, premises, real customers. It opens the conversation: DMs and WhatsApp are the sales channel for most Albanian businesses. For restaurants, venues, shops, hotels and clinics, social brings customers every day.
Why without social it does not work
A business without a profile or with a dead profile looks closed. The client who sees it on Google checks Instagram before coming: if the last photo is a year old, they go elsewhere. Tourists and young people choose from social before Google. The competitor with daily stories gets the hesitating client. In Albania, where half of decisions are made on the phone in the evening, social is the shop window open 24 hours.
What social does not do: Google
Whoever searches “dentist Tiranë”, “hotel Sarandë me pishinë”, “avokat pronë Vlorë” does it on Google, not Instagram. Google shows the map (the Google profile) and sites (SEO). A social profile almost never appears for these searches. A business with social only loses all clients who search actively, often the ones most ready to buy.
What social does not do: contacts
Followers are not yours: they are the platform’s. You cannot write to them outside it, you have neither their email nor phone, and when the algorithm changes, reach drops from 30% to 3% with no warning. A site with a form, an email list with consent and WhatsApp Business give you contacts that stay yours whatever the platform.
What social does not do: dependence
A profile can be blocked over a wrong report, hacked, lost when the employee who created it with their own email leaves. It happens every week in Albania. A business with only Instagram is left with no channel overnight. A site and domain in your name cannot be blocked by anyone.
What social does not do: complete information
Tourists want prices, hours, how to get there, what is included, how to book, in their language. On Instagram they find photos and must ask by DM. On the site they find everything and book. Foreign, corporate or professional-services clients look for the site: a social profile is not enough for them to trust.
The complete presence: five parts
1) The site in the clients’ languages, with complete information and a form: the base nobody takes away. 2) A curated Google profile: the map for “near me” and searches with the city. 3) Social: visibility, trust, conversation. 4) WhatsApp Business: where the sale closes. 5) The contact list (email and WhatsApp with consent): your clients whom you contact when you want. The five feed each other; each alone is incomplete.
How they work together
The client sees the video on TikTok (social), searches the name on Google (Google profile and site), reads prices and reviews (site), writes on WhatsApp (WhatsApp Business), books, leaves an email (list), gets the offer next year (email). If one link is missing, the client stops there: video without a site, site without WhatsApp, WhatsApp without a list.
By sector
Restaurants and venues: social and Google profile first, a simple site with the menu. Hotels: a site with a booking engine and the Google profile first, social for the destination, email for past guests. Real estate: a site with listings and Google Ads first, social for properties and areas. Clinics: Google profile, a site with treatments, social with the doctors. Shops: Instagram and WhatsApp first, a site when orders grow. Professionals: site and Google profile, LinkedIn. The order changes, the parts do not.
The split budget
Whoever spends everything on social ads and nothing on the site pays for every client. Whoever builds the site and Google profile once and keeps social active, after a year has clients coming by themselves from Google and the list, and social ads become complementary. The good split: the base (site, Google) as a one-off investment plus maintenance; social and ads as a monthly fee; email almost free.
Example: a restaurant in Vlorë
Instagram only, 8,000 followers, all bookings from DMs. In June the profile is blocked for two weeks over a report: zero bookings, the season at risk. The solution: a simple site with the menu in three languages and WhatsApp, a curated Google profile (it did not exist), a client list with consent, Instagram restored as one of the channels. The next year: 40% of bookings from Google (map and site), 35% from Instagram, 25% from the list and walk-ins. No single channel can stop the restaurant any more.
The mistakes
Thinking Instagram is the website. Not having a Google profile. Collecting followers and not contacts. Creating profiles with the employee’s email. Running social ads without a landing page. Leaving the site empty because “we work with social”. Stopping social because “we have the site”. Both are the same mistake from opposite sides.
Where to start
If you have only social: the Google profile (free, one hour) and a simple site with complete information and WhatsApp, then the list. If you have only the site: the Google profile, then Instagram or Facebook depending on clients, with a calendar. If you have nothing: Google profile and WhatsApp Business today, site and social within two months. The free analysis tells you the order for your case.
Frequently asked questions

Do I need a site if I have a Google profile and Instagram?
For foreign clients, companies and your own contacts yes. For a local shop, later.
Are followers my clients?
No, they are the platform’s. Your clients are those on your consented list.
