E-commerce in Albania: payments, shipping and trust. When an online shop makes sense
Most Albanian online shops take orders on WhatsApp and get paid in cash. Whoever builds an e-commerce “like in Italy” without understanding this sells less than a well-made Instagram profile.

How Albanians buy online
They see the product on Instagram or Facebook, ask by DM or WhatsApp, order by message, pay the courier on delivery. Online card payment is still a minority, especially outside Tirana, for lack of trust and habit. Whoever ignores this behaviour builds a shop nobody uses.
Cash on delivery
It is the standard: the courier collects the money and passes it to the shop, with a commission. Advantage: the customer buys without fear. Limits: returns and refusals on delivery (the customer does not open the door), refusal rates up to 15-20% for some categories. Solutions: confirmation by phone or WhatsApp before shipping, a deposit for large orders.
Card payment
Albanian banks offer payment gateways for e-commerce, with an activation cost and a per-transaction fee. It makes sense for shops with volume, for sales abroad (Kosovo, diaspora, foreigners) and for services (courses, tickets, bookings). Offer it as an option, not the only one: the customer chooses.
Shipping
Albanian couriers cover the whole country in 24-48 hours at low cost, and Kosovo at a slightly higher cost. Free shipping above an amount raises the average order. Returns: a clear policy (7-14 days, who pays the return). For EU shipping: higher cost, customs, time: it makes sense for valuable products (crafts, typical food, clothing).
Trust
Albanian customers buy from whom they know: the physical shop, the active profile, reviews, a phone that is answered. The online shop must show: the physical address, phone and WhatsApp, the person, real reviews, photos of your products, clear policies. A shop without a face and a phone does not sell in Albania.
WhatsApp as “e-commerce”
For shops with few orders a day, Instagram with a priced catalogue + WhatsApp Business with a catalogue and quick replies + a courier with cash on delivery is the most efficient e-commerce: almost zero cost, a satisfied customer, an order confirmed by conversation. The online shop is added when this is no longer enough.
When an online shop makes sense
When orders exceed 20-30 a day and WhatsApp cannot handle them. When the catalogue has hundreds of products with variants (sizes, colours). When you sell outside Albania. When you want to appear on Google for products (“buy X online Albania”). When customers themselves ask for “the site to order”. When you want to automate: order, courier, invoice, stock.
When it does not
A small shop with few products and local customers. Products that need trying (expensive furniture, glasses). A business that does not answer the phone and does not ship on time. A budget that ends with the build and leaves nothing for ads. In these cases, the online shop stays empty and costs maintenance.
Platforms
For small and medium shops, well-known open-source or hosted platforms with modules for cash on delivery, Albanian couriers and languages. For large volumes, custom solutions. In any case: ownership of the shop and data in your name, catalogue export, integration with invoicing. The wrong platform costs double after a year.
Costs
A basic online shop with catalogue, variants, cash on delivery and card, courier, three languages: a one-off investment higher than a presentation site, plus maintenance and payment fees. Product photos are the underestimated cost: hundreds of products need days of shooting. Ads to bring customers: a separate monthly budget.
Selling to Kosovo and the diaspora
Kosovo is the natural market: same language, couriers that deliver, cash on delivery or card, high demand for Albanian products. The diaspora buys gifts for family in Albania by card from abroad: the shop must accept cards and deliver within Albania. Foreigners buy crafts, typical food, clothing: EU shipping and an English site are needed.
Ads for the shop
Meta for visual products (product video, dynamic catalogue, remarketing to viewers). Google Shopping for product searches. TikTok for clothing and cosmetics. Objective: orders, not clicks. Cost per order is compared with margin. Without ads, an online shop has no traffic: budget for them.
Example: a cosmetics shop in Tirana
The start: Instagram with a catalogue and WhatsApp, 15 orders a day, cash on delivery. After a year: 40 orders a day, WhatsApp overloaded, lost orders. The online shop: a 400-product catalogue, variants, cash on delivery and card, an integrated courier, automatic invoicing, Albanian and English. Instagram and WhatsApp remain for advice and small orders. After six months: 70 orders a day, 25% from Kosovo, 30% by card. The shop’s cost covered in four months.
How to decide
Count today’s orders and where they come from. If WhatsApp handles them and customers are local, improve Instagram and WhatsApp. If orders get lost, the catalogue grows or you want to sell abroad, build the shop with cash on delivery as the first option, card as the second, an integrated courier, three languages and ads in the budget.
Frequently asked questions
Do Albanians buy by card online?
Still few, especially outside Tirana: cash on delivery must always be an option.
What does shipping cost?
Low across Albania in 24-48 hours; slightly more to Kosovo; much more to the EU.
Do I need an online shop if I sell on Instagram?
Only when orders exceed 20-30 a day or you sell abroad. Otherwise, Instagram + WhatsApp are enough.
Which platform?
It depends on volume; in any case in your name, with cash on delivery and Albanian couriers.
