Email marketing for Albanian businesses: the list, the law, the tools and what to send
Email is not dead: foreign clients read it, companies decide by email, and a list of 2,000 consented contacts is worth more than 20,000 followers. In Albania few businesses use it, and those few use it badly.

When email works better than WhatsApp
Foreign clients (Italians, Germans, British) who read email and do not want WhatsApp from businesses. Companies (B2B): offers, catalogues, sector news. Many contacts (over 256): the WhatsApp broadcast list is not enough. Long content (guides, detailed offers). WhatsApp remains for locals and conversation; email for planned offers and foreigners.
Building the list
A form on the site with a reason to sign up (discount, guide, first access to offers). Hotel check-in, shop orders, quote requests. Fairs and events (business cards with consent). Past clients contacted for consent. No bought lists, no addresses scraped from the internet: they are illegal and end in spam. A good list is built over years and lasts for years.
The law
Clear consent to receive commercial communications (a ticked box, not pre-ticked). An unsubscribe option in every email. Data kept in a secure tool, not in Excel. For EU contacts the European rules apply (GDPR): consent, right to deletion, information. Albanian data protection law goes the same way. Whoever sends without consent loses reputation and risks fines.
The tools
Professional email platforms with templates, lists, segmentation, automation, statistics and legal compliance. Low cost for lists under 2,000 contacts. Linked to the site (form), the CRM or the booking engine. Not Gmail with BCC: it ends in spam, breaks the law and measures nothing. Your domain configured for sending (SPF, DKIM): the agency does it.
Segmentation
By language (Italians get Italian). By type (past client, new contact, company). By interest (rooms, property in Sarandë, cosmetics). By city or country. Two or three fields collected at sign-up are enough. Segmented emails are opened twice as much as one-size-fits-all.
What to send
Planned offers (early booking, new arrivals, holiday promotions). Business news (new opening, new service, prices). Useful content (area guides, tips, blog articles). Event invitations. A review request after the service. For B2B: the new catalogue, a case study, the fair. One topic per email, short, with one button.
The calendar
6-12 emails a year for B2C, 12-24 for B2B. Hotels: January (early booking), March, May, September, November. Shops: before holidays and arrivals. Real estate: monthly with new properties per segment. Clinics: quarterly with tips and offers. B2B companies: monthly with sector news and products. More annoys; fewer gets forgotten.
How to write it
A short, concrete subject (“Anna, 15% for June in Sarandë”). The recipient’s name. One good photo. Three to five lines. One button. A signature with the person’s name and photo. In the segment’s language. On mobile (70% are opened on phones). Tested before sending. A long email with ten offers is not read.
Automation
Automatic sequences: welcome after sign-up, thanks after purchase or stay, review request after a week, reminder before an offer expires, birthday. Built once, they work forever. For hotels: before arrival (information), after departure (review, offer). For shops: the abandoned cart for e-commerce.
Measurement
Per email: delivered, opened, clicks, unsubscribes, conversions (bookings with code, orders, enquiries). Per year: revenue from email versus the cost of the tool and work. Usually email has the highest return of any channel, because the list is already yours. Offers and months that work are repeated.
The mistakes
A bought list. Sending from Gmail. No unsubscribe. Long emails. The same email to Italians and Kosovars. Sending only when the business is empty. Not automating. Not measuring. Forgetting the list for a year and then sending five emails in a month.
Example: a real estate agency in Sarandë
The list: 1,800 contacts collected over three years from the site, enquiries and fairs, with consent, split by language and interest (Sarandë, Ksamil, villas, apartments). A monthly email per segment with new properties and an article (“how to buy as an Italian”). Automation: welcome, similar properties after an enquiry. Result: 25% of yearly sales from list contacts, a modest tool cost, two hours of work a month. It is the channel with the lowest cost per sale the agency has.
How to start
The tool and the form on the site. Consent added to check-in, orders, quotes. The welcome sequence. The first planned email to past clients with consent. The yearly calendar. Measurement after every send. After six months, the list has a few hundred real contacts and the first email with a measured return.
A sample email for a hotel in January
Subject: “Marco, Ksamil in June: 15% for our past guests”. Body: “Hi Marco, last summer you stayed with us with your family. For June and September we have reserved a 15% discount for past guests, with breakfast and port transfer included, until 31 March. Book direct with code MARCO15.” One beach photo, a “Book” button, the owner’s signature with name and photo. 80 words. Sent to the Italian segment in Italian, to the Polish segment in English, to Kosovars in Albanian via WhatsApp instead. Measured by the code: dozens of direct bookings from one send.
