What it costs in Albania
The cost per 1,000 impressions in Tirana is among the lowest in Europe: a few euros. A click to WhatsApp costs a few cents for locals, more for foreign tourists in season. With a modest monthly budget a restaurant reaches tens of thousands of people within 10 km and gets hundreds of messages. The problem is not the cost: it is not measuring what they bring.
The right objective
Not “likes” and not “views”: the objective is messages (WhatsApp or Instagram DM) or clicks to the menu and booking. Meta optimises the ad for the objective you give it: if you ask for likes, it gives you likes from people who will never come. If you ask for messages, it gives you people who write “do you have a table tonight?”.
Who should see it
Locals: a 5-10 km radius from the restaurant, age by venue, interests in food and going out. Tourists: “people travelling in” your city, in their language, in season. Those who visited your profile or site: remarketing, the cheapest and most effective. Splitting into three separate campaigns lets you see which works.
The ad content
A 10-15 second video of a dish being prepared or of the atmosphere; a dish photo in natural light. Short text: what, where, how to book. Button: “Send message” or “Book”. Three or four variants Meta tests itself. No aggressive offers (“50% off”): they attract the wrong customers. A clear offer works: “fresh fish tonight, terrace tables”.
When
Locals: Thursday-Saturday, 5-9 pm, the decision hour. Tourists: during the day, before they plan the evening. Events: a week before, with a reminder two days before. Off-season: a small budget for weekends and holidays. An ad left running 24/7 spends in hours when nobody books.
How much budget
For a mid-sized restaurant: a monthly amount costing less than one good evening, split 60% locals, 30% tourists in season, 10% remarketing. Increased only if measured bookings grow. Starting with a small budget for two weeks shows what works; then you concentrate there.
Measurement
Messages received from the ad (Meta shows them). Bookings noted at the till as “from the ad”. Clicks on the menu. Cost per message and per booking. If a booking costs 2 euros of ads and is worth 40 euros of table, the campaign earns. A monthly report the owner can read.
Event campaigns
Live music night, the New Year menu, Valentine’s, Sunday brunch: an ad for a single event to the right people a week before is the campaign with the clearest return. Limited seats, booking by message, video of the past event.
The mistakes that waste money
Boosting a post with no objective. Targeting “all of Albania”. Flash or stock photos. An ad with no message button. Unanswered DMs: you pay for messages nobody reads. The same budget every month regardless of season. No measurement. The ad account in the agency’s name and not the restaurant’s.
Meta Ads and Google together
Meta finds you customers who were not looking for you (locals choosing where to go out). Google finds you customers who are looking (“seafood restaurant Sarandë”). For most restaurants, a curated Google profile (free) plus small-budget Meta Ads is the right combination. Google Ads is added only for high-value searches (weddings, events, groups).
A sample campaign for a restaurant in Durrës
Objective: WhatsApp messages. Audience 1: Durrës and surroundings, 10 km, aged 25-55, interested in restaurants and going out, Thursday-Saturday 5-9 pm. Audience 2: tourists in Durrës, Kosovars and Poles, June-September, during the day. Audience 3: people who visited the profile in the last 30 days. Creative: a 12-second video of the fish dish with the terrace, three dish photos, text “Fresh fish every day, terrace tables: book by message”. Budget split 60/30/10. After two weeks: audience 1 brings low-cost messages, audience 2 tourists with a higher bill, audience 3 has the lowest cost per booking. Budget is reallocated where bookings come from.
Replying to messages: where it is won or lost
Meta brings you the message; if nobody replies for an hour, the customer has booked next door and you paid for the click. WhatsApp Business with ready replies (free tables, menu, address) in three languages, a notification on the reception phone, one responsible person at peak hours, confirmation with name and time. Measure the average reply time: under 10 minutes at peak hour is the goal. It is the part of the campaign that costs no money and decides everything.
Ads for delivery and orders
If you deliver, separate campaigns: objective clicks to the order page or the platform, audience within 3-5 km, hours 11 am-1 pm and 6-9 pm, a clear offer (“free delivery over 2,000 lek”). A video of the dish being packed and arriving. Measurement: orders with a code from the ad. Cost per order is compared with the margin: if the average order is 2,500 lek and the ad costs 150 lek per order, the campaign earns.
