Food photography for restaurants in Albania: the photos that fill tables

The same dish, shot with flash from above on a dirty table or in natural light with the chef’s hands: the first drives customers away, the second brings them in. The food is the same.

Why food photos sell

On Instagram the customer chooses the restaurant by the dish. On Google Maps they look at photos before reviews. On the digital menu they order dishes with photos. On delivery platforms they click the prettiest photo. A good photo raises the average bill and fills tables; a bad one does the opposite, even if the food is excellent.

Light

First rule: natural light, from the side, near a window or on the terrace in the morning or late afternoon. Never direct flash: it flattens the dish and makes it dull. Never the kitchen’s neon light: it turns food yellow. A white or dark board to bounce light is enough. Most bad photos of Albanian restaurants come from flash.

Angle

From above (90 degrees) for flat dishes: pizza, salad, the laid table. At 45 degrees for dishes with height: byrek, fish, burgers. Close-up for details: cocktails, desserts. A clean plate, rim without marks, a tidy table. One or two elements around (fork, glass, bread), not ten.

Styling

The real dish as you serve it, fresh, shot within two minutes. Sauce at the last moment, fresh herbs, a little oil for shine. Colours: a white plate, a neutral background, the food standing out. The chef’s hands, fingers taking a piece, wine being poured: movement brings the photo to life.

Phone or photographer

For stories and daily posts: a good phone, with natural light and the rules above. For the menu, Google, site and ads: a professional photographer, once a season. The right combination: the photographer for the 20 base dishes, the staff for daily content, with guidance and the same filters.

The shooting day

A list of the 15-25 main dishes (the best sellers and the highest-margin ones). The kitchen informed: dishes prepared one at a time, not all together. Time: morning 9-11 or afternoon 4-6 with natural light. Place: a table by the window or on the terrace. Three to four hours for 20 dishes. Also staff, venue and some video clips on the same day.

Formats

Horizontal for the site and Google. Square and vertical for Instagram. Vertical for stories, Reels and TikTok. The same photos, cropped for each format, delivered in high resolution and web versions. File names with the dish name for Google.

Food video

5-10 second clips: fish on the grill, cheese melting, sauce pouring, a cocktail being made. Shot the same day, with a good phone in natural light. They are the content Instagram and TikTok distribute most. Ten clips are enough for a season.

Cost and lifespan

A professional set of 20 dishes with three to four hours of shooting costs about a few good evenings. Photos last until the menu or venue changes: two to three years for base dishes, one season for new ones. Stock photos cost less and sell less: customers recognise them.

The mistakes

Flash. Photos from above with a dirty table. A cold dish shot after ten minutes. Stock photos of dishes that are not yours. Heavy filters that change food colours. Different photos on menu, Google and Instagram. Photo rights not in the restaurant’s name.

Typical Albanian dishes in photos

Byrek, tavë kosi, fërgesë, qofte, grilled fish, roast meat, baklava: warm-coloured dishes that photograph well in natural light on a dark or wooden background. Foreign tourists want to see them before ordering: they do not know what “tavë kosi” is. The photo with a description in three languages on the menu is what makes them order the typical dish instead of pizza. A well-photographed traditional dish sells the restaurant’s identity.

Photos for delivery platforms and Booking

Delivery platforms have rules: horizontal photo, dish centred, no text, neutral background, minimum resolution. A dish with a good photo on the platform is ordered twice as much. Hotel restaurants also need breakfast and dining-room photos for Booking. Ask the photographer for versions cropped for each platform on the shooting day: it saves hours and ensures quality everywhere.

Budget and return

A photographer’s day with 20 dishes, venue, staff and ten video clips costs about a few evenings. If the new photos raise the average bill by 10% (dishes with photos are ordered more) and bring 5% more customers from Instagram and Google, the investment pays back in weeks. Phone photos without light cost zero and lose customers every day: the real cost is the invisible one.
