Where reviews are read
Google for everyone (the map, “restaurant near me”). TripAdvisor for foreign tourists, especially Italians, British and Germans, who use it as a guide. Instagram for young people and locals, through comments and tags. Booking and delivery platforms for their cases. The restaurant must be present and curated on the first three.
How much they weigh
A restaurant with 4.5 and 800 Google reviews fills tables without discounts; one with 4.9 and 30 cannot be found. Number, average and freshness affect map ranking. On TripAdvisor the city position (“#12 of 340 restaurants in Sarandë”) is shown to tourists and depends on the quality and quantity of recent reviews.
The end-of-meal method
The right moment: after dessert, when the customer is satisfied. A QR code on the bill with the direct link to the Google review; for foreign tourists also to TripAdvisor. A spoken request from the waiter (“if you enjoyed it, a review helps us a lot”). No reward in return: forbidden and harmful. One customer in six leaves a review: with 100 covers a day, hundreds a month.
Replies
To all, within 48 hours, in the customer’s language, with a detail of the meal. Future customers read replies and they show care. Google and TripAdvisor reward profiles that reply. Short, personal replies, not copied text.
Negative reviews
Reply calmly: thank them, acknowledge the problem if real, say what you changed, invite private contact. Do not make excuses, do not attack, do not blame the customer. Future customers read the reply: a good reply is worth more than a lost star. Fake reviews (competitors, ex-employees) are reported with reasons.
A crisis
A viral video about a problem (inflated bill for tourists, bad behaviour) can destroy a season. The reply must come within hours, public, honest, with what you have done. Silence or deleting comments make it worse. A written plan for these cases (who replies, how, where) is part of reputation.
Instagram and comments
Comments and tags on Instagram are public reviews. Reply to all, share stories from customers who tag you (with thanks), keep DMs open. A customer who posted your dish and got a reply becomes an ambassador.
Reviews as advertising
The best reviews on the site, on Instagram (a “They say about us” highlight), on the digital menu, in ads (“4.6 from 900 reviews”). For tourists, TripAdvisor certificates at the entrance. A good review is the most convincing text you have: written by someone who paid.
Complaints as information
If five reviews in a month mention the wait or unclear prices, the problem is real. Once a season read all the reviews and make a list: what is praised (highlight it), what is complained about (fix it and say so in replies). It is the most honest survey you have.
A weekly plan
Every day: replies within 48 hours. Every week: check new reviews on Google, TripAdvisor and Instagram; one good review in stories. Every month: number, average, TripAdvisor position versus competitors. Every season: complaint analysis and changes. One hour a week for the reputation that fills tables.
Example: the “inflated bill” crisis
A tourist posts on TikTok the bill of a restaurant in Sarandë with prices that seem inflated: 200,000 views in one night. The restaurant that stays silent loses the season. The restaurant that replies within hours, publicly, with the menu showing prices, with the explanation (fish by the kilo), with an apology if there was a mistake and with the change (prices printed on every table) closes the crisis and often gains sympathy. A reply prepared before the crisis is worth a season.
Which platforms for which customers
Locals and Kosovars: Google and Instagram. Italians: TripAdvisor first, then Google. British and Germans: Google and TripAdvisor. Poles: Google. Young people: TikTok and Instagram. For a restaurant in Sarandë or Vlorë this means three curated platforms; for a Tirana restaurant serving locals, Google and Instagram are enough. The end-of-meal review request points each customer to their platform.
What reputation is worth in lek
A restaurant in Sarandë with 4.6 and 900 reviews can hold prices 15% higher than a competitor with 4.2 and 200, and fill tables in June when the other is half empty. Over a season that is tens of thousands of euros of difference, for one hour of work a week and a QR code. No advertising has this return. That is why reputation should be every restaurant’s first online job.
